Naylor (who is also a member of Canadian folk artist Dan Mangan’s band) has an impish sense of humour that shows an affinity for the merrymakers of the ICP Orchestra. You can hear Misha Mengelberg’s spare, subtle intervals and dry-martini wit in his playing, though it’s Mengelberg filtered through Brad Mehldau.”

Back from three years in Berlin, pianist Tyson Naylor enlisted drummer Skye Brooks and bassist Russell Sholberg to create a trio that performs original music that straddles the boundary between the composed and the improvised. For the listener, what may be a sparse, pastoral ballad nurtured until the last note during one performance could be unceremoniously picked apart the next. Naylor's compositions draw on influences as wide ranging as Misha Mengelberg, Wayne Horvitz, Louis Moholo, Professor Longhair, Beethoven, Ornette Coleman, and Paul Bley.
